From the perspective of history, this paper further clarified the understanding of general education, and according to the developing of the general education in Chinese Universities since Chinese reforming and opening-up, it analyzed the causes, effects and limitations of different educational concepts in different periods. Taking the educational and teaching reform in some universities as an example, this thesis gave us a specific analysis on the nature, experience, tendency, deficiencies and enlightenment of the current general education reform in Chinese universities.This thesis can be divided into four parts. The first part elaborated on the contents, viewpoints, merits and demerits of all-round education in 1980s, which is the budding period of general education. The second part expounded the proposal, ideas and the practice of the cultural quality education in 1990s. The third part emphasized the rising of general education, and the practical study carried out by many universities in China in the 21st century, then deeply analyzed the limitations of the general education. The fourth part analyzed the achievements and deficiencies of the general education reform in Chinese universities, and threw light on the general education in Chinese universities.Based on the previous study, this thesis elaborated the three stages of the developing system of general education, replenished the concept of general education, and summed up the characters of general education. It points out that different universities should adopt different levels of the general education on the basis of their respective situations. The author believed that most universities in our country, especially the teaching-oriented universities, lie in the lower first level, and a few research-oriented universities have been to a transitional period towards the higher second level, among which few are exploring and working hard towards the ideal third level of the general education.
