Developing students' communicative ability and helping them to take a positive attitude towards English are the major goals of English teaching. Thanks to the attention paid to cultivating students' communicative competence, more and more English teachers have become increasingly concerned with this field in the past years. However, influenced by the test-oriented system, many of them are still used to teaching English in the traditional way. In class, they pay too much attention to explaining language points, and students are busy copying what the teacher has written on the blackboard. Students are in a passive position during the whole period of classroom teaching, and they are usually discouraged. In addition, students have few chances to practice the language, so their positive emotions towards English are badly hindered and they feel depressed. Many of them have even given up learning English.By utilizing the theories of modern pedagogies as well as combining the psychological characteristics of senior high school students, this paper puts forward the suggestion of applying Situation Teaching Method in English class. Situation Teaching Method is to create some active and emotional situations in English class, which can arouse the students' interest in English.The paper consists of six chapters. In the first chapter, the background and the purpose of the research are stated. In the second chapter, the paper explains the implication of the Situation Teaching Method from the aspects of "situation" as well as "Situation Teaching" and the relevant theoretical works, and the research done on Situation Teaching both at home and abroad is also introduced. In the third chapter, by analyzing the psychological characteristics of the senior high students and the requirements of the Curriculum Criteria , the paper states the necessity of applying the Situation Teaching Method in senior high school. In this chapter, the paper introduces the detailed application of the Situation Teaching Method in senior high schools from three aspects: vocabulary, text and grammar. Next, through the questionnaire and the experiment, the paper proves the Situation Teaching Method to be an effective to improve the teaching quality of English in senior high school. In the last chapter, the paper summarizes the significances and some limitations of the research.
