Application Of TELOS To Secondary English Teaching

In the early 1980's, Models of Teaching co-written by B. Joyce and M. Weil was introduced into China. Since then, lots of introductions to and research on teaching models have been done, and a multitude of valuable results have turned out. TELOS built by Professor Zou Weicheng of ECNU is one of the English teaching models based on college English teaching.However, can TELOS be used in secondary education? And how can we use it? The thesis will answer these problems in four parts as follows.Introduction, briefly explains the importance of English, introduces the characteristics of TELOS, and brings forward the main questions and methods of the research.Chapter one, defines the concepts of the teaching model and English teaching model; introduces the National English Teaching Standard and the 2^nd Shanghai curriculum reform's demand on English teaching model innovation and English teaching; comments on two representative models: Krashen model and 16-words teaching model; and puts forward how to apply TELOS to Secondary English teaching on the base of the TELOS research findings.Chapter two, introduces the fundaments of TELOS, focusing particularly on the five hypotheses (Input Hypothesis, Comprehensible Output, Learning Starting-point, Humpty-Dumpty Effect, and Negative Evidence), the main contents (Target Language Input, Engagement, Learner's Active Choices, Comprehensible Output, Selective Negative Input), and its basic principles.Chapter three and Chapter four, introduce the methods of implementation of TELOS in secondary English teaching, and quantitative research on TELOS.The results indicate that TELOS is effective only for capable students. It can improve their English performance and learning attitude, but it can not increase their learning adaptation level, cooperation level and study self-efficiency, neither can it change their viewpoint on the essential of study.
