On The Wen Chuan Earthquake Reports: A Gender Awareness Perspective

This dissertation is devoted to the investigation of Wenchuan Earthquake reports from a gender awareness point of view. To be specific, against the background of mass media's market-orientedness and popular culture's secularization, we try to give a systematic study from the perspective of the gender theory.The purpose of this study is to analyze the inadequacies in media reports about earthquake relief between women and children, which using content analysis, text analysis and case studies. The results showed that, due to the lack of gender awareness which is inherent in media, the coverage of women will bring misleading to the society. At last, this thesis advocates that the mass media should to shoulder social responsibility, enhance the awareness of gender, and strengthen to disseminate the ideas of gender equality, so that promote the harmonious development of relations between women and the media.Finally, in this dissertation, it can also be concluded that: Bringing gender consciousness into media mainstream and establishing the space for genders equalization need the co-operation of the media. In addition, the worthy experiences from Wenchuan reports could give some advisable suggestion to the development of other media in the future.
