As one of the most dominant language teaching approaches in the world today, the task-based language teaching (hereafter TBLT) is becoming a catchword in English teachers in China. The new national English Curricular Syllabus also recommends the use of the task-based teaching approach in classroom teaching. Based on the modern theories of TBLT and in a method of combining theoretical explanation and analysis with practical application, the thesis attempts to probe into the TBLT theory and to give a practical introduction to the task-design and development of TBLT.The writer carries out case studies of an English teacher in a high school implementing the task-based innovation, and try to inspect and verify how to design tasks in TBLT. An important trend in language teacher development in recent years has been a move away from the teacher as passive recipient and implementer of other people's syllabuses and methods, towards the idea of the teacher as an active creator of his or her own materials, classroom activities and so on. How teachers implement changes in pedagogy may be achieved through reflection and action research. Reflection is more than thinking and focuses on the day-to-day classroom teaching of the individual teacher as well as the institutional structures in which teachers and students work, and action research provides a way of working which links theory and practice into the whole: ideas in action.Data obtained from classroom observation, interview, teacher's log, and questionnaires shows that the application of TBLT in junior high schools can be beneficial to improve the students' competence; task-design must conform to the students' psychology and the cognitive process. Rational task-design is helpful to meet students' need and interest; teachers who have the experience of joining in the action research can achieve further development step by step.
