Task-based approach has been a hot teaching method during the past20yearsin English for second language teaching; many scholars and linguists have doneresearches into this area theoretically and practically. And lots of information anddocumentation has come into being. TBA has been highly recommended for primaryand secondary school English teaching in English Curriculum Standards forCompulsory Education as well as in English Curriculum Standards for SeniorMiddle School (ECS experimental). Teachers are suggested to apply this teachingmethod as much as they can; giving clear tasks to students, letting them cultivatecompetence while finishing tasks. In this method, task design occupies a key place.Therefore, the author realizes that it is of great necessity to elaborate task design toassure more teachers know how to design efficient and perfect tasks for4skills inEnglish teaching so as to help students.At the very beginning, this article presents a general idea about TBA and therelevant frameworks. Then, the author discusses the task from the following aspects:the definitions; features; compositions and typologies of task. In next section, theauthor also illuminates the principles for task design in high school. The emphasis ofthis paper will be laid on the application of task design in listening, speaking,reading and writing. At last, the author provides two cases and questionnaire toprove interesting tasks do raise students’ interest and cooperation skills in Englishacquisition and language competence.
