A Study On The Oversea Studying Subsidized By Chinese Merchants In The Early 20th Century

In the early 20^th century, the merchants-subsidized oversea studying had its own characteristic, compared with other types. Firstly, on the background that the Republic of China just was established and full-scale construction was under way, merchants was getting stronger social responsibility and national pride. Secondly, from the cases mentioned in this paper, merchants at that time had financed a large number of students aboard. Finally, it played an important role in both the overseas education and the social modernization of the Republic of China Period.Based on newspapers,magazines of the early 20^th century and related literatures, the characteristics role and position of the merchants-subsidized oversea studying is investigated in this paper. Centering on the theme that the merchants-subsidized oversea studying, this paper emphatically analyzes two typical cases of two merchants from the background of the rising of oversea studying, concluding its general rule, characteristics and the impact that this oversea studying form made on both the society at that time and later. Contrasted with the official-expense oversea studying and the self-sponsored oversea studying, it shows the important position and effect that the merchants have made. Furthermore, the paper deepens the study on the theme that the merchants-subsidized oversea studying in the early 20^th century.
