China has stepped into the stage of mass higher education in 2002, with a proportion of higher education entrance of approximately 22 per cent presently. Due to our particular social system, course of educational development and unevenness in the economic development, the national conditions make the path of our mass higher education obviously different from that of western developed countries. As it is leaping forward, the present path with Chinese characteristics has demonstrated a great many contradictories and frictions in the process of our mass higher education, among which the employment of the graduates is the most salient. That the employment of graduates tends to be difficult is not only a waste of human resources, but also detrimental to economical and social development as well as the further improvement of the scale, quality and beneficial results of the higher education from a long-term and macroscopic view. Therefore, it is necessary for us to select the right policy to enhance the development of higher education coordinatively and ease up the problems of difficulties in graduates'employment. This text examines the problems of employment of graduates from the view of the paths of higher education development. By comparing with paths of mass higher education in foreign countries, it examines the paths of Chinese mass higher education, summarizes the unique feature, analyses the circumstance and problems of developing path of popularization with distinct Chinese characteristics by taking instances. This text believes that the major force of our mass higher education is from the government, reaching a marvelous developing scale in a short period of time and, at the same time, bringing the unevenness between expansion and social demand as well as between higher education structure (categories, gradations, etc.) and industrial structure. This text believes that while the academic undergraduates and post-graduates are so much, the aggregate number of Chinese university students is such that the number of graduates who reach the standard of qualified personnel of application is obviously low. Objectively speaking, there are many reasons for the dilemma of graduates'employment. This text believes that although our specific path of popularization is not the only direct reason for the difficulties, it is this developing path that makes the displacement between former structure of specialized course along with training scheme and economic development along with social demand more demonstrable. Meanwhile, with the aggregate supply of graduates increasing rapidly, the aggregate social demand does not synchronously increase for all kinds of reasons, decreasing the employment rate of graduates and worsening the situation. This text suggests that we follow the regular pattern of education and develop higher education ahead of the times in an appropriate measure. Moreover, we should presently emphasize more on proceeding from our national conditions, continuously optimizing the range, gradations and specialty structure, enhancing the guidance of relative polities and improving the employment ability of graduates as well as the acceptant ability of the society. This is and efficient solution to the problem which has a value of consulting for the higher education's adapting to the overall developing trend of the society.
