Through imitating and using postgraduate education in the western developed countries for reference, postgraduate education in China has developed. The ultimate goal of diving into postgraduate education is to obtain efficient postgraduate education. According to the new institutional economics theory,"institution is the most important resource",a sort of institution correspond to a sort of efficiency. Education institution is also a sort of important education resource, good education institution can improve education efficiency, and poor education institution can reduce education efficiency. The paper starts with the efficiency of postgraduate education in China, and cut to the theme——the institution of postgraduate education. In order to further clear the corresponding relation of efficiency-institution, the third chapter specifically exhausts the connotation of the efficiency of postgraduate education and the status quo of efficiency of postgraduate education in China, and then expatiates the key factor that restricts the efficiency of postgraduate education in China——the institution of postgraduate education and its function.The institutional change theory of new institutional economics provides special view for us to observe the institutional change of postgraduate education. Under this view, the institutional change of postgraduate education is a process and also a result of joint interaction of political, economical and cultural domains etc., and its essence is the redistribution and adjustment of power and interest. Therefore, the postgraduate education institution can't be discussed without history and cultural tradition and realistical background. Linking China's unique society, economics, politics and cultural environment, chapterⅣ,Ⅴ,Ⅵdiscourse detailedly upon the institutional change of postgraduate education in China. Using Professor Yang Rui-long the supply-oriented institutional change theory, chapterⅣanalyses the mode of institutional change of postgraduate education in China, and concludes the characteristics of institutional change of postgraduate education in China from headspring, main body and mode of institutional change, and then probes into these problems existing in institutional change of postgraduate education in China from main body ,mode of institution change and path dependence of institutional change, and finally the chapter discusses the trend of institutional change of postgraduate education in China. ChapterⅤsummarizes the driving theory of institutional change and through analyzing the driving theory of institutional change and linking the character of postgraduate education, expatiates the connotation of the driving theory of institutional change of postgraduate education, and finally analyses the driving theory of institutional change of postgraduate education in China from two aspects of inner and outer dryings.ChapterⅥexerts the path dependence theory of institutional change to analyze the characteristics of institutional change of postgraduate education in China. Path dependence theory is the important part of institutional change theory. The chapter firstly introduces the connotation, dwells on formative causation, result and form of path dependence, links actual condition of the institutional change of postgraduate education in China, and analyzes the path dependence of institutional change of postgraduate education in China.
