Studying on our own is a very important ability for everyone. Especially in today's world and society, there is more and more new information and knowledge that we must study. So, how to train the students to study on their own is a significant topic. This ability can affect their whole life. The students should be the masters of our English class, and they should study and think on their own. We should create a good English classroom to help students development good study habit and thinking ability, let them have more interest about English, improve thinking habit and creative spirit. This research is to discuss training the students to study on their own in English classroom of middle school.The students are 230 boys and 245 girls aged average 14 who range first and third year in proficiency from beginner to senior, through some questionnaires and teaching practice.In my thesis, I study the basic theory of students autonomy, how it come out and the developing process. Why should we focus on this question? What's the significance? In China, what's the real condition of the English language teaching and learning? How should we train this ability? Human basic psychological needs for learning. So we should use these needs. Self-regulated learning theory is another basic theory. Diverse students individual differences in English learning is an important teaching method. Learning style and learning strategy should be considered, too. Definition of students autonomy is introduced, too. I'll talk about data collection. They are boy students and girl students aged average 14 who range first and third year in proficiency from beginner to senior. And I do some data analysis. The questionnaire was presented as a normal classroom activity for the students to make a response for each of the statements. Through this analysis we can know the real condition and reason of our foreign language teaching. Then we know how to improve. I'll introduce the results of the investigation. Use some forms to give concrete numbers. The findings show that it's really worth being thought carefully. There are some factors affecting students autonomy on the teachers' part: it includes Teachers' function, Teachers' teaching materials, Classroom interaction patterns, Teachers' assessment on the students' learning.In general, the students attitudes towards and motives for learning show that it is possible and necessary to develop the students' ability of studying on their own in classroom in middle school. The language classroom can provide a favorable environment for developing the capacity for autonomy.
