With the initiating and furthering of China's r basic education curriculum reform, new curriculum concepts gradually come to the implementing stage. However, the implementation process should be realized on the basis of substantially converting advanced concepts into all teachers' educational practices. As implementers of curriculum reform, the scientific literacy of teachers will have direct influence on the cultivation and development of students' scientific literacy. So what is the status quo of middle school chemistry teachers' scientific literacy? What is the relationship between levels of scientific literacy and teaching effects? In view of the current situation, what measures can be taken? Above are the issues this paper intends to probe into.The present study conducts a theoretical research on scientific literacy through literature-summarizing methods, examining the general proposals about scientific literacy home and abroad, thus summing up the scientific literacy requisite for a middle school chemistry teacher from the perspectives of education and chemistry specialty. Moreover, by employing questionnaire study and interviewing to explore the status quo of the scientific literacy of some middle school teachers in Xiamen City, together with a comparison and analysis of the resulting data, the paper thus puts forth the strategies and suggestions for cultivating the scientific literacy of middle school chemistry teachers.
