Nowadays, great attention has been attached to on-the-job postgraduate education in foreign countries. However, there is a lack of systematic theoretical research and practical exploration on the subject in China. Therefore, it is of great significance to conduct a systematic research on it. From the historical perspective, the essay, with the methods of both documentary and comparison research adopted, summarizes the development of on-the-job postgraduate education in China, explores the characteristics of on-the-job postgraduate education development in China, and analyzes the existing problems of the postgraduate training. Based on the successful experiences of the U.K and U.S.A. spare-time postgraduate training patterns, some constructive proposals are made on the transformation of China's on-the-job postgraduate education, so as to facilitate the development of on-the-job postgraduate education in China.
