China has historically been reputed as"a nation of manners". Even today, the Chinese people are still consciously or unconsciously cultured and bond by the traditional Chinese manners. Manners are the kind of standards of etiquettes and behaviors that have striking social ethical and cultural colors and are observed by people in their social life when expressing their good wishes and kind feelings between each other. To some degree, manners indicate the cultural progress of a nation or a country. It is thus the sublime mission of the education of manners to select, impart and advocate the traditional ethics of the Chinese nation. University students are not only the ones to pass on the traditional Chinese ethics but also the ones to be educated of the new moral standards that can satisfy the requirements of the advancement of the times. Therefore, it is of great importance to impart the knowledge of manners among university students.This paper has first made an introduction to the education of manners among university students through its definition, connotation, role or function as well as the necessity and importance of the education, and in this part a presentation of the status of the researches in this regard is also included. Next, the paper probes into the understanding of manners by the university students today and makes a special study on the topic of manner education deficiency by studying its status and analyzing the causes. At last, considering the status and causes of manner education deficiency, the paper puts forward a systematic thought on the education of manners among university students, including its education principles, contents as well as its implementation approaches, aiming to elevate this education to a level compatible with the construction of the socialism with Chinese characteristics and the building of a moderately prosperous and harmonious society.
