The research is promoted by the calling for the New Curriculum Reform and based on music teaching practice in Chinese middle schools. Music appreciation course, an obligatory course for middle school students, is important for it is helpful in training students' ability to understanding beauty. With the deepening of the New Curriculum Reform, it is time for us to give our due attention to the training of students' ability in appreciating beauty in music without violating aesthetic laws and ignoring students' aesthetic psychology. We should do our best to take advantage of teaching art to students as part of the All-round Development Education Program. With music aesthetics, music psychology, music aesthetic pedagogy as our theoretical bases, we have set up a framework and the evaluation system for teaching music appreciation. Our study is in conformity with the aesthetic principles and is based on students' aesthetic psychology and our teaching practice. The evaluation system, a lever in a sense, can be used to guide, control, encourage and appraise the teaching of music appreciation, thus hopefully improving the students' ability to understand music. And as for the strategies of teaching, we think that they are useful in providing guiding principles to teachers in their teaching to avoid "blindness" and "freedom" .This thesis is composed of four parts. The introduction presents the purpose , the scope , the method and the framework of our study. The second part is mainly about the make-up of students' ability of music appreciation. This includes their sense perception in the beauty of the music form, in their feeling of the emotion expressed by music, in their imaginative ability to get images evoked by music and in their ability to understand the spirit produced in music. The third part studies the evaluation system and the related teaching methods. The evaluation system deals with the what to be evaluated, the standard of evaluation, samples and analysis of examination paper. We also discuss some practical and workable strategies by giving specific examples from our teaching practice. The last part is the conclusion. We think that our research is far from satisfaction and we hope that further research needs to be done in the future.
