The functions of teacher are preaching,imparting knowledge,answering doubts,in other words the teacher is the mediator between civilization and people.There won't be any cultivated man without teachers.Without a doubt,the teacher plays an important role in the society.Since ancient times,many educators and wise men has made profound expositions on the issue of teacher and teacher education.In modern times,as a result of the industrial revolution,the needs for talent and knowledge have become more and more urgent,thus the significance of teacher and teacher education in the whole development of modern society has been more and more obvious and expositions on the issue of teacher have been more and more familiar.This paper analyses the background of modern foreign theory on teacher,then turns to the explanation of it according to different types and relevant content,finally summarizes the characteristics of it,with a view of providing good references for the reform and development of China's teacher education on the basis of those characteristics.In addition to the preface and conclusion,this paper contains four parts.Preface deals with the origin of this study,the explanation of relevant concepts,the analysis of research status quo and the research program.The first part introduces the background of the development of modern foreign theory on teacher.It is mainly about how education evolvement and new achievements in science influence the development of modern foreign theory on teacher.The second part discusses the traditional education side's theory on teacher.The main representatives of traditional education side are Bagley,Conant and Makarenko,it is mostly about their thoughts on teacher.The third part is about the modern education side's theory on teacher.It focuses on Dewey,Montessori's expositions on the issue of teacher,who are considered to be the chief representatives of modern education side.The fourth part expounds the harmonious development side's theory on teacher.It concerns about harmonious development side's key representatives' thoughts on teacher, including Kuniyoshi and Sukhomlinski. Conclusion is about the characteristics of modern foreign theory on teacher.It summarizes the characteristics of three sides' theories on teacher and estimates each value in history.
