Since 1990s,the higher education in China has been through a rapid development.As the expansion of school scale unfolds,more and more limitations of higher education inner administration system,which formed in the planned economy period,are exposed to block higher education's regular development.It is for this reason that all-rounded inner administration system revolution is desperate needed,and then to set up another that is well adapted to the market economy of China,which is a heavy task for educational revolution.A traditional administration pattern of universities in western countries is professor automomy which sprouted in the mediaeval European universities.In order to vindicate self-government and academic freedom in university,it is essentially to make sure that professor,either individual or collective,can run the main affairs(especially academic ones) in the university by way of law, university principles,and certain organizations,such as professoriate,senate and science committee etc.Professor autonomy walks a long way to go through four stages in the western universities' development,i.e.formation,consolidation,complement,and transformation.This is decided by worldwide higher education development trend and higher education itself.What is more,it also played an important role in forming the latter-day university system in China.In recent years,it becomes focus again for the penetration of higher education system revolution.According to a "what-why-how" logic,the thesis tries to form a thorough and deep analysis on professor autonomy with literature material and comparisons.It aims at give reasonable suggestions to reform the existed reasonless system and to put professor autonomy into practice.The thesis can be divided into four parts.In the first part,the author gives the definition of professor autonomy and a brief review of its history.It concentrates on defining the concept and specific analysis of historical development both in and out of the country.The second part mainly illustrates the reasonability and realistic meaning,which emphasizes the characteristics of university as an academic organization as well as professor as a carder of knowledge.These two factors are mutually influenced by each other. Professor autonomy is a good way to balance the academic power and the administration one,for it can desalt both administration and government official standard to form a fine competition.Part three accounts for the argumentation of professor autonomy.It is in this part that the hot points such as professor autonomy,professor academy,and principal autonomy are distinguished,and thus leads into the problems and thinking of professor autonomy in China.Last but not least,the forth part describes the assumptions on specific measures of the realization of professor autonomy,in other words,it presents the feasibility of professor autonomy.In terms of professor,university,and the nation,this part proposes some reasonable advices for the main body,operating model,and consensus to ensure the complement of realization of professor autonomy.
