Teachers'professional development is the central link of the educational reforms. Improvement of teachers'quality is the prerequisite of the educational progress. Only unceasing teachers'professional development can help create higher educational level, so it has gradually, whether at home or abroad, become the educational reforms'common goal. In recent years, the concerned teachers'professional development research has become a hot topic in domestic education. Also P.E teachers' professional development is of great importance,especially for general universities. It is the requirement of the teaching profession progress, the needs of social development, and the inevitable trend of the world's education.The author has outlined the background and discussed theoritical basis of research on P.E teachers'professional development in general universities. The author's study was based on the relevant domestic and international literature review. It defined related concepts and raised relevent theories. It proposed the cycle theory of the teachers'professional development, and led by it summarized six characteristics, four principles and four orientations in teachers'professional development. Through the questionnaire and interview methods, the author gathered enough data. The author established his standpoint of current situation both latitudinally and longitudally, and reached his conclusion;the overall status is well, practice-reflect is the main and general orientation, and different states are at different stages of development. The author tried to analyze the cause of this situation and summarize the main influencing factors, which may give directive suggestions in promotion of the level of teachers'professional development in China, especially P.E teachers'professional development in general universities in Beijing.
