A Strategy Study On Development Of Life Science Discipline In Four Research Universities Of China And America

It was wildly recognized that life science will be the leading discipline among all subjects of natural sciences in the current 21st century. Life science has become one of the most important indicates of a country's development level. After the Second World War, life science in America grew up quickly and has become the leading country in the world. Compared with America, there is a large gap in the development of life science in China. Because of their powerful scientific research competence, innovation competence with large amount of excellent researchers, research universities play important roles in promoting the development of life science of a whole country.This paper started with the brief analysis of the concept of life and life science, and then turned into the hardcore to the demonstrative studies on the development strategies of life science in four research universities (two American universities and two Chinese universities). Prior to discuss the development strategies of life science in these four famous universities, this paper analyzed the situation of life science in the context of two countries. The five items of investment of research expenditures, the composition and the specialty of this discipline, the culture of talents, the output of scientific papers and the gain of important awards were investigated in detail both from the governments and from the universities. On the basic of these analyses, this paper extracted the inner traits of the development of life science in the four research universities and summed up the successful experiences of American research universities and the insufficiencies of that of Chinese research universities. Finally, this paper prospected the development of life science in our research universities, and hoped that great progress would be made in development of life science in our country in the 21st century.After analyzing the situations of USA and our country from the governments and the typical researches universities, some conclusions can be obtained as follows: (1) American government paid great attention in life science. (2) In the development of life science, famous American research universities combined stability with flexibility. (3) Famous American research universities paid much attention to the discipline crossover and fusion, especially the combination of life science and medicine. (4) There is a wide foreground of life science in China that the government should enlarge its investment and backup in life science. (5) Compared with American research universities in life science, there are evident deficiencies in our research universities. We should learn those precious experiences from America, increase the support of basic researches and innovations, make use of our own advantages, grasp the chances, and be good at flexibility. In these ways, the breakthroughs in the development of life science in our country would be achieved.
