With the expansion of doctoral education in China,much controversy has been concerned with the quality of doctoral education.This study,basing on the survey of the four stakeholders who are mostly involved in doctoral education:doctoral candidates,doctoral candidates' supervisors,principal officials of graduate education administration sectors and doctorate recipients,attempts to find out the four groups' comparative cognition of doctoral education quality,in order to provide some advice for government and society.Faculty and students' cognition of doctoral quality is a kind of ideology formed in the reality of doctoral postgraduate education with the symbol of social psychology.In the study,with the view of higher education quality,a survey was carried out among doctoral candidates,doctoral candidates' supervisors,principal officials of graduate education administration sectors and doctorate recipients from Chinese mainland's five research universities with 4134 questionnaires,and interviews were given to part of the faculty and students from one of the five universities.The paper tries to describe the four groups' comparative cognition of the indicators of doctoral education quality and their influencing elements;analyzes the similarities and differences of the four groups' cognition,and points out the different quality elements and the different quality influencing factor weights;finally,it reveals the four groups' whole cognition and evaluation of the current doctoral education quality.The major conclusions include:1."Ability of scientific research and innovation" and "basic and professional knowledge" best indicate quality of doctoral education,which is a common recognition among faculty and students.Besides,doctoral candidates' supervisors, principal officials of graduate education administration sectors emphasize "quality of degree dissertation" that shows quality of doctoral education more visibly;while doctoral candidates attaches more importance to "knowledge in relative disciplines", which means improvement of competence. 2.Most people in the four groups recognize "supervisors' instruction"and "academic atmosphere"as the most important elements influencing doctoral quality. And there exist some differences among faculty and students' recognition by disciplines.Except the two factors,a higher proportion of people from disciplines of science,engineering,agricultural and medical science recognizes "conditions for scientific research" as an important influencing element on doctoral quality;those with background of social science inclined to consider "practice for scientific research" higher;the groups from discipline of human science consider "development of disciplines " higher.3.The doctoral candidates,doctoral candidates' supervisors and principal officials of graduate education administration sectors all hold a high evaluation of the current doctoral quality.A majority of the doctoral candidates' supervisors and principal officials all hold a basic opinion that current doctoral quality is basically equal with the past.However,in the aspect of "quality of degree dissertation" and "level of foreign language",it has some improvements.
