Faced with the growing trends of globalization and knowledge-based economy, each developing country is struggling for a better way both to take advantage of the coming opportunity and to deal with the coming challenge, which enables them to achieve a kind of sustainable development. Though with totally different present situations as well as historical and cultural traditions, four countries(Mexico, Brazil, Argentina and Chile) in Latin America, together with China, all performing as important developing countries, can still find commonplace in their respective research university building.Since the late 1980s to the early 1990s, the four countries in Latin America, and China, have all been greatly engaging in building competitive research universities, which is on one hand, benefited from the achievement of mass higher education, and on the other hand, promoted by each government, with the hope of supporting national economic growth.The thesis has three parts: research background; a brief introduction of research university emergence in Mexico, Brazil, Argentina and Chile; a comparison between the four Latin American countries and China on different features and trends, followed by enlightenment based on above analysis.
