With the deepening reform of the new curriculum, as one of the most important elements in Chinese course, novel reading enhances students'ability to collect information, widens their visions as well as broadens students'thinking and imagination. Meanwhile, it cultivates students'healthy aesthetic qualities. Therefore, reading novel effectively for students is very significant to their growing in future. At the same time, it's also very important to strengthen Chinese learning practice and meet the need in Chinese course teaching.The thesis makes a survey to the students'novel reading situation in middle school. It studies novel reading with the demanding of the new standard in Chinese curriculum based on literature review and questionnaire.'What are the problems for junior school students in novel reading after class And how should they deal with these problems.'With such questions, the thesis studies the problems existing in novel reading, and exploits some corresponding strategies, hoping to improve the current situation in novel reading for junior school students and guiding teachers to provide the reading materials to students better.The thesis surveyed current situation in novel reading of 182 middle school students selecting in No. 5 railway Middle School in LAN Zhou. The questionnaire involves reading materials, purpose, and time, students'view to reading teaching and understanding to different novels from different students. The results indicates that the major problems are as following: learning students is not sufficient teaching methods are obsolete students are lack of interests and initiates in novel reading and reading time is not enough.To such problems, the thesis suggests some corresponding strategies: first, teachers should improve their qualities second, teachers should bear the responsibility to affect and guide students'reading third, students should set clear reading goals and make reading plans fourth, try to excite students'interests and improve teaching methods fifth, to practice students'reading skills and last to evaluate students'reading timely and efficiently.The whole thesis includes three parts: the first part clarifies the reason, purpose, background, meaning and methods of the study. The second one analyzes the current situation of junior school students in novel reading and explores the further reasons based on data analyses. The third part suggests some corresponding strategies to develop students'reading ability.
