Reading is the main method to acquire knowledge and an important way of learning about the world. Both the entrance exam for senior high school and the national college entrance exam attach more and more importance to students’ mathematics reading skills. Currently,Their interest in and attitude and habit of mathematics reading are not conducive to an optimistic future in middle school student. And even teachers’ perception of mathematics reading is worrisome. Therefore, the status quo of mathematics reading should be improved and students be granted more space for development. Teaching strategies in mathematics reading should be offered to teachers and learning strategies to students. Students’ interest in and habit of mathematics reading should be given more emphasis to.These are worthy of attention to the direction of teaching research.This thesis mainly researches on the mathematics reading of junior high school freshmen, and analyzes teaching strategies aimed at improving their reading skills. based on various sources, the author offered a definition of reading and mathematics reading, and clarified the uniqueness of mathematics reading. Subjects were determined through interviews, and research was conducted on mathematics reading of junior high school freshmen from four aspects, namelymathematics reading habit, mathematics reading obstacles,after-class mathematics reading and mathematics reading strategies. Excel and spss17.0 were employed in the analysis of results. Finally, the author followed up experienced teachers, studied their teaching modes and proposed teaching suggestions for different types of lessons based on personal teaching experience.The thesis generates the following conclusions on junior high school freshmen’s mathematics reading:On reading habits: 1)previewing the textbook is conducive to increasing in-class teaching efficiency and nurturing students ’ mathematics reading comprehension; 2) 70% of students from top classes have the habit of note-taking; 3)during self-study sessions, students can achieve better results if they adopt such strategies as reading intensively,combining reading and writing, retelling theorems and concepts,and following examples.On the ability to tackle reading obstacles: 1)students with a better knowledge structure of mathematics are more capable of solving problems; 2)when meeting with a problem concerning mathematics, the majority of students with better mathematics reading skills will rely on other ways of acquiring knowledge to solve the problem.On students ’ interest in reading and the amount of mathematics reading:1)students’ performance in mathematicsis positively proportionate to the amount of reading and the time devoted to reading; 2)the more ways students have of acquiring knowledge in mathematics, the larger the amount of reading they will do, and the better mathematics reading comprehension they will have.while giving new lessons,teachers should 1)give emphasis to reading the textbook; 2)determine the appropriate timing for reading based on the content;3)and teach reading skills and improve students’ reading quality.While giving classes on exam papers, teachers can adopt the following strategies 1)underlining;2)raising rhetorical questions and associating; 3)attaching notes;4)code switching. Whiling reviewing:the following strategies can be employed 1)mind mapping;2)distinguishing and discussing concepts;3)code switching;4)having exercises on special subjects;5)sharing experience in problem solving.
