| Ever since its formation, hierarchical teaching theory, on one hand meets the need of education for all-round development and student's personality development, and on the other hand is also instrumental to avoid the drawbacks of class teaching.In P.E. teaching, studies have been devoted to the hierarchical teaching method and results are very plenty. As is indicated by many studies, hierarchical teaching helps a lot to enhance students' confidence in learning, to bring up consciousness of taking exercises and to develop a lifetime habit of taking exercises. Due to hierarchical teaching of objects and hierarchical assessment of examination, such a method will be helpful to bolster students' confidence, make it possible for bad students to make progress, lays a foundation for good students to improve their competitiveness, and also encourage students to learn on their own initiative. The scientific and orderly arrangement of teaching levels leads the corresponding development of students' knowledge and mastery of skills with the development of sports activities from lower level to the higher. Experiments show that hierarchical teaching works much better to arouse students' interest than traditional teaching method.However, in the author's more than 10 years' teaching experience, it is found that hierarchical teaching has not been popularized among teachers. Therefore an experiment is carried out in Ningbo University of Technology in order to answer the question.The experiment is carried out through referring to literature and other information, mathematical statistics, logical reasoning and teaching as an experiment. A class (48 students) is randomly selected among the undergraduates of the year 2006 as the subjects, and another class is selected randomly from the rest as the control group. The effect and applicability of hierarchical teaching is tested by teaching experiments.The method of hierarchical teaching is in line with the principle of teaching according to students' ability. The hierarchical level dividing is a dynamic process which focuses on students and tries to bring up students' initiative and activeness, and at the same time, which also stress the inter-level relations. The mechanism of competition is created, in which students are able to be moved up or down the level so as to form good atmosphere of mutual competition and progress. It strengthens students' confidence, brings up their consciousness of doing exercises and helps to develop a habit of taking exercises.
