More and more educators have paid enough attention on the educational philosophy of cultivating students' key competences, and the geographic key competences have become hotspots of educational researches in recent years.Geospatial ability, as the basic ability of geography, has an indispensable role in cultivating students' key competences. The research on geospatial ability has certain value both in educational theory and teaching applied researches.In this paper, on the basis of predecessors' research achievements, combined with the core concept of the geography curriculum reform, the paper analyzes and defines the classification and segmentations of geospatial ability. In this process, the expert survey method has also been used to test and amend the classification rules of the geospatial ability which is analyzed in this paper, to ensure a certain degree of scientificity. Based on this, the idea of hierarchical measurement of geospatial ability is put forward. It aims to realize the intelligent measurement method which can automatically match the test questions according to the level of geospatial ability of different students through informational technology, and it also can provide feedback to students real-time online. Different from the traditional unified test questions and paper-based measurement methods, hierarchical scale consists of multiple sets of test questions, different levels of the test subjects will encounter different levels of difficulty test module in the course of the test, and the test method which adjusts the difficulty in real time according to the ability of the subjects' measured level has a preliminary sense of the intelligent performance. The test questions are compiled in accordance with the classification projects and intelligent requirement. In order to ensure the scientificity and validity of the test questions, the test materials are mainly derived from college entrance examinations and the existing research results over the years, then combined with the actual requirements of this study to adapt and create the test questions. After the completion of the test, information technology has been used to achieve the difficulty of automatic adjustment of the scale function and the page release. Then after the implementation of questionnaire survey in high schools of Province Jiangsu, the results show that the geospatial ability of students is affected by gender differences, and the level of geospatial ability of boys is higher than that of girls. Besides, the level of geospatial ability is positively correlated with geographical grade. The analysis of the preliminary application of the scale shows that the scale is relatively effective and scientific.Finally, based on the analysis of the connotation of geospatial ability, the design of intelligent scale and the results of preliminary application, the paper draws the basic conclusions and analyzes the problems and prospects of the research topic.
