Mathematics estimation is of great importance and significant value. However, it has not been fully reflected in actual teaching process. This paper, based on the pupils of Grade 3 to Grade 6 as the tested, carries out an investigation and research on awareness and strategy of mathematics estimation. It also makes a research on the teaching method and strategy to improve pupils'awareness and capacity of estimation in actual teaching process.The purpose of this research is to let pupils experience the value of estimation, foster their awareness of estimation and form a habit of making reasonable mathematics estimation, so that they can solve practical problems in life by means of estimation.It is found through the survey that the pupils have some certain ability to carry out estimation, but there exist significant differences between them. Most pupils are still used to perform accurate calculation, who regard estimation as a mandatory requirement and can not choose a proper way according to specific situations. Besides, their calculating methods are very limited.Pupils'awareness of estimation should be fostered in their daily life, in rough calculation of large numbers and also in some simple projection of quantities. During the teaching of mental arithmetic, written calculation, geometry and problem-solving, pupils should be trained to make estimations for identifying"more than","less than", or"close to", and they should also be taught to adjust their estimating results according to the specific situation. Only by doing so can pupils'estimating capacity be improved.
