As the booming development of Wushu around the world, the theoretical studies of Wushu have become increasingly important. Today's Wushu theory consist three directions which have the concept"extolling virtue, educating people"in common. One direction is the theory of competitive Wushu which advocates Wushu routines and free sparring. One direction is the theory of fitness Wushu which depends on the traditional Wushu routines and emphasizes disease-curing, health-promotion, and self-cultivation. The other direction is the attack and defense theory of Wushu which succeeds tradition and emphasizes practicality. These theories are carefully drawn from systematic discussion which last a long period, rather than roughly generalized by impulses. China has been governed by Republic of China for 38 years. During this period, various ideological trends cross swords while warlords built their won regime in the situation of instable polity and war of years. On account of the advocating Wushu theory, Wushu was still showing a trend of development and achieved certain results. The aim of this thesis is to explore and excavate the Wushu theory in the specific historical period to reveal its impacts to modern Wushu development.This research analyzes the social background and content of Wushu theory of the Republic of China by using literature review, logical analysis and interviewing experts, explaining its far-reaching influence to the development of Chinese martial arts.First of all, the research illustrates the theoretical background of Wushu theory in Republic of China in four aspects: first, the influences of military country physical education theory; second, the influences of pragmatism physical education theory; third, the influences of national physical education theory; fourth, the influences of naturalism physical education theory.Secondly, the research analyzes the content of the Wushu theory which had been advocated in Republic of China in three ways: first, the advocacy of militarization of Chinese martial art, including: restoration of wildness, protecting the nature of Wushu, restore sovereignty by force, saving nation by Wushu; second, the advocacy of sports style of Chinese martial art, such as add Wushu lesson in school ; third, the advocacy of scientific style of Chinese martial art, including the scientific style of Wushu literature, the scientific style of Wushu classification, the scientific style of Wushu competition.Again, the research comments the three impacts of the Wushu theory of Republic of China towards the development of Chinese martial arts: first, the impacts of the Wushu theory of Republic of China towards the development of school Wushu, such as offering the references for the modernization of school Wushu, enriching the teaching instruments of school Wushu, broadening the experiences of school Wushu; second, the impacts of the Wushu theory of Republic of China towards the development of competitive Wushu; third, the impacts of the Wushu theory of Republic of China towards the development of fitness Wushu, namely, drawing the attention of public to fitness Wushu, adapting the fashion of fitness Wushu.Finally, The article carries on the summary to the Republic of China time martial arts theory, discovers suits the contemporary martial arts development the method, hoped that the martial arts will serve the society well in the future.
