Today English is an important tool in international communication and getting all kinds of information. Therefore, cultivating the ability to use English in communication is a major goal of English teaching in middle school. Textbooks are the core of English teaching. It determines the content and organization of teaching. Textbook analysis and valuation is based on analyzing and evaluating the textbooks according to a certain set of criteria. The purpose is to know the strengths and weaknesses of the textbooks, to see whether it meets the teaching needs, and to offer guidelines for textbooks selection and to make better use of the textbooks. This research chooses two sets of English textbooks as comparative objects, one is JEFC, which was used before in junior school in China, published in 1994, the other one, Go for it! is currently used in junior school in most areas of China, published in 2006. Based on the overview of former researches, three research methods, documentary, comparative, analytical are adopted in this study. The thesis compares and analyses the surface-layer structure of the two sets of textbook in some aspects, such as organization system, content choosing, column designing, and pictures. At the same time, this research also makes a complete comparison and analysis in the aspect of the deep-layer structure, which includes emotional and attitudinal elements, culture consciousness elements, knowledge elements, and language skill elements. Based on the comparison and analysis, a survey is done on the using of the two sets of English textbooks. The strong points and shortcomings are summarized and presented. Through dynamic and static research methods, the advantages and disadvantages of the two sets of English textbooks were summed up, to help teachers have a better understanding and make better use of Go for it!, and integrate materials flexibly in teaching course. Then it makes the students learn English well so as to achieve the requirements of the new English Curriculum Standard. In the last chapter, combining comparing and investigation conclusions of the two sets of English books, some suggestions are put forward on how to improve and use the textbooks. The research findings show that organization system of the JEFC is accepted by most of the teachers in the aspect of the surface-layer structure. They think it is systematic, logical, circulative. In the aspect of the deep-layer structure, the teachers think highly of the language knowledge, including pronunciation and intonation, vocabulary and grammar. The comparision results show that most of the teachers are satisfied with the topic contents, column designing, and pictures of the Go for it!, but it is defective in organization system. In the aspect of the deep-layer structure, emotional and attitudinal and culture consciousness elements are generally praised by English teachers, especially the language skills. They think that the textbook pays more attention to the training of listening, speaking, reading, writing, but its language knowledge is superficial than the other aspects. There are four chapters in the thesis. The first chapter summarizes the research of the textbooks and it outlines the basic principle of the textbooks, the introduction of the recent researches on the editing and the evaluation of the textbooks in the world. The second chapter is about structure comparison of the JEFC and Go for it!. A complete comparison and analysis is made in the aspect of the surface-layer structure and the deep-layer structure. Through questionnaire and interview research, the third chapter raises the further thought of the comparison. A survey is done on the using of the two sets of English textbooks.
