Chinese four-character idioms are the carriers of the rich Chinese culture. The special form of Chinese four-character idiom is condensed and sparse. However, the meaning included is complicated and deep. For the foreign students, although the study of Chinese four-character idioms is not only an efficient way to improve the Chinese level, but a good opportunity to get more knowledge of Chinese history or culture, it is a very difficult point in teaching. Even the students in intermediate and advanced level are usually found the errors in the process of using the Chinese four-character idioms. Therefore, this thesis is based on the study and analysis of the errors of using the Chinese four-character idioms, which made by the foreign students of Yunnan University in intermediate and advanced level,and then hard working in looking for the reasons of errors as well as the methods of the Chinese four-character idioms teaching improvement.In this thesis, firstly, the errors of the Chinese four-characters idioms collected are described, classified, and statistically analyzed. In this process, the error classification is based on the corpus collected. Combined with the previous research concepts, the classifications of the Chinese four-character idioms finally include the first and second levels, In the first-level classification,the written form errors,semantics errors, grammar errors, and pragmatics errors are included. Under each the first level, there are a lot of detailed the second-level classifications. Through the analyzing on the errors classified, the errors are statistically analyzed.The statistical results showed the proportion of the grammar errors among all error collected is highest, and the second highest proportion is semantics errors, meanwhile, the numbers of the written form errors and the pragmatics errors are least. Based on the statistical results, the questionnaire is designed for asking the teachers’opinions on the reasons of errors, and the teachers are from the College of International Students of Yunnan University, teaching the intermediate and advanced level courses. This investigation result indicates that the complications of using the Chinese four-character idioms and the shortages of the training on the Chinese four-character idioms are the main reasons.Combining with the experience and the insights of classroom observation, the reasons of errors are analyzed by the order from primary to secondary. Finally, strictly according to the analysis on reasons of errors, some detailed suggestions about improving the Chinese four-character idioms teaching are put forward.
