On The Skills Of Translating The Middle And Old English In The English Literature Of Social Science

The use of long and difficult sentences is a basic feature of English social literary which causes many problems for its Chinese translator. As far as the two languages are concerned, English is a logic-oriented language of hypotaxis, while Chinese is a language of parataxis that is not rigidly constrained by a specific syntax. In terms of their syntactic structure, English sentence is long and has a tight structure as well as a variety of post-modifiers; Chinese sentence is short and its structure relatively loose. The difference in syntactic structure between English and Chinese is the root causes of difficulty in Chinese translation of long and difficult English sentences.Based on the comparison and analysis of long and difficult sentences in social literary, the thrust of this paper is twofold, one is to shed some light on the disparity between Chinese and English sentences and its underlying reasons in the dimension of Hypotaxis and Parataxis, the other is, in accord with the characteristics of long and difficult sentences in social literary, to explore the applicable strategies in English-Chinese translation of long difficult sentences based on my own translation practices and the understanding of long and difficult sentences in social literary.
