“Su Yan”is a literary book mainly about the origin of folk language and dialects studied by the famous learner Yang Shen in Ming Dynasty. The items in the book are not too many,but the majority of them are folk-custom vocabularies. It has a great value on folk custom study and language study.This essay contains four parts. The first part only includes Chapter One which is the overview of “Su Yan”.It mainly states from the author, the process and writing features of this book.The second part includes Chapter Two, Chapter Three and Chapter Four. This part contains the way of study common literal words and folk literature. In this part, the author pays much attention to folk literature study and its consciousness of folk language."Su Yan”was put into Yang Shen’s folk language study to enlarge the study range and adopted further ways to explain the reasons and methods in “Su Yan”.For reasons of word and text layout,the second part not to chapter.The third part is Chapter Five which aims at the content of “Su Yan”.That is the study of folk vocabulary.The author used folk linguistic theory to study the collective folk vocabulary which is also the basic preparation.The fourth part is Chapter Six. In this part, “Su Yan” is compared with “Yu Dou”and “Su Shuo”. It mainly compares between the author and the final book, the collective vocabulary and numbers,structure arrangement to show the special cultural value of “Su Yan”.The ending part is the summary of the essay and states the important meaning from folk linguistic view.The author also hopes to arouse people to attach importance to the rare version and to make contributions to help save the folk vocabulary.
