Under the dual stimulation of the Renaissance and the Reformation, portrait as the best manifestation mode of individual liberation and secular gained rebirth and development. In this historical period, having been influenced by classical culture and the Reformation, Hans Holbein the younger combined the preciseness of Gothic and the elegance of Italian, finally became the most prominent portrait master of Northern Renaissance. The greatness of his works lies in the records of contemporary figures,society and ideology which described with historical art language. Single-portraits successfully shaped many images of historical figures, showing the characteristics of the commercial and industrial sectors, humanists’ knowledge and wisdom, luxury and majesty of the court nobility of Henry VIII of 16 th century. This is the result of Hans Holbein the Younger’s superb realistic technique, historical observing perspective and deep humanistic concern. Multiplayer portraits: Ambassadors and family portraits of Thomas More recorded scenes of social life: from material enjoyment to spiritual pursuit, to family education. New knowledge, new science, new family show progressive forces in society during this change, but the deeper information which Hans Holbein the younger recorded are widespread anxiety under the variety of social and political crisis. As Hans Holbein the younger’s unique style, historical art language reveal the spirit and philosophy of the history era. This article will try to analyze Hans Holbein the younger’s vision and approach of historian, which the history era endow, and read the historical view of his biographical portraits.
