The Strategies Of Interpreting Chinese Four - Character Interpreting At The Press Conference Under The Guidance Of Skopos Theory

The press conference, where official news is issued and the political stand is expounded, has always been focused on by the foreign media and audience. At the press conferences of NPC and CPPCC, Premier Wen Jiabao frequently applies the Chinese four-character structure, the unique Chinese language featuring symmetrical structure, fertile meanings as well as vivid expression. However, the interpretation of the Chinese four-character structure has brought challenges to interpreters. According to the Skopos theory, interpreting methods are determined by the Skopos. In order to achieve the expected communicative purpose, interpreters should take hearers’ acceptance as the judging criteria and choose the interpreting strategy accordingly. The thesis has analyzed the application of explicitation strategy in interpreting the Chinese four-character structure from the perspectives of both form and meaning on the basis of the Skopos theory and the characteristics of the Chinese four-character structure. The research data comes from the press conferences of NPC and CPPCC. The thesis aims at providing help and guidance for interpreters in interpreting the Chinese four-character structure in the practical work.
