The paper selects the Developing Chinese elementary comprehensive course as the object of study. The reason why we select the books which are influential and used widely, not only because the teaching material has a lot of foreign readers, but also because students in the primary stage have great dependence on the English explanation of Chinese words. In this paper we give a comprehensive and systematic analyze to the English explanation of Chinese words of the two books and summarize seven main models of the explanation of the Chinese words. We give a deep comparison from the transverse and longitudinal ways to the two books, point out these advantages and disadvantages of the explanation of the Chinese words. Then we offer some workable suggestions to the books and to the teachers who teaching Chinese, so they could give a good supplement to the English explanation and avoid the disadvantages of it in the class.
