In the context of globalization, international cross-cultural management emerged, more and more cross-cultural leaders and managers face the challenge of a variety of cross-cultural adaptation. For large group companies, especially multinationals, the mobilization of international and domestic is increasingly common, which makes higher demands with cross-cultural management. Those cross-cultural managers not only need to adapt to cross-cultural and diverse work environment, but also need to develop their own cultural intelligence in uncertainties. Those who have many management skills in the motherland can’t adapt to the new cultural environment, when called to serve overseas institutions management positions. It is because that they have become accustomed to the domestic environment management culture. The cross-cultural experience brings not only novel and mystery but also anxiety and stress to transnational learning students or expatriates. How an individual to deal with complex international commercial real differences exist in the world and uncertainty. The concept of cultural intelligence has provided a good interpretation to this question. This paper is based on a new perspective with CQ to study cultural adaptation. The research object mainly included undergraduate and graduate students who study abroad and accept that elementary, middle and high school education or university education under the Chinese education system. Meanwhile, previous literature review showed that the impact of individual cultural intelligence on cross-cultural adaptation was focused on the socio-cultural adaptation. Therefore, this paper focuses on the study of their socio-cultural adaptation, and the initial psychological adaptation and academic adaptation is not taken into account. By reviewing the research of cultural intelligence and cross-cultural adaptation, the author found the deficiencies of the existing research gaps, firstly made model assumptions, and secondly collected the sample data through a questionnaire survey method, and lastly conduct empirical research with data processing and analysis. After analyzing the results of the data, the study hypothesis was partially validated and the following conclusions were drawn.(1) The individual’s cognitive CQ and motivational CQ have significant impacts on their cultural adaptation.(2) Social support, especially friends’ support plays a regulatory role on cultural adaptation.(3) Both the individual’s official language ability and the time of Cross-cultural contact have significant impact on their cultural adaptation. Apparently, it is necessary and important to take cultural intelligence into the studies of cultural adaptation. That’s to say, cultural intelligence should become a new perspective of cross-cultural management research. Due to the limitations of the study and the sample size, this study has many deficiencies. I hope to be able to make more research on this basis. From a practical point of management, we can make further study about other related topics, which aim at exploring how to improve the managers’ CQ by cross-cultural training, in order to help them achieve better performance and cross-cultural leadership. |
