Teaching vocabulary is one of the central topics in Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language (TCFL). This dissertation has researched most recent papers in this field, including studies on the teaching principles, ontology, teaching strategies, methods, textbook instruction and a number of other topics. Those studies have explored this issue from different perspectives and therefore enable the teaching of vocabulary to be more targeted. However, little research has been conducted on vocabulary instruction in class, which, as a bridge between theory and practice, is expected to be the future direction of research in TCFL.In recent years, there is a dramatic increase in the demand for international Chinese language teachers, followed by an ever-growing number of overseas Chinese teachers. It is therefore essential for us to emphasize the quality of vocabulary instruction. However, as the majority of overseas Chinese language teachers are volunteers, most of them lack ample experience in this field. Therefore, they are chosen as the primary concern of this study. This dissertation first explores the status from two perspectives:direct class observations in China and analysis of teaching videos drawn from International Society for Chinese Language Teaching. On this basis, a comparative study is conducted to investigate the general situation of vocabulary instruction by new overseas volunteer teachers, leading to the discovery of some basic features of their teaching strategies and some problems in the teaching process. It is expected that this study would facilitate the future theoretical instructions and skill training for new volunteer Chinese language teachers. This dissertation is divided into five chapters:The first chapter is an introduction, which consists of three parts:the reason of choosing this topic and research questions, the significance and aims of the research, and finally a literature review. The second chapter presents the methodology of the research, covering research participants, method and procedure. The third chapter mainly explores the status of Chinese vocabulary instruction. The fourth chapter investigates vocabulary instruction of those beginner overseas Chinese teacher. The fifth chapter presents an in-depth analysis of the situation and the conclusion, followed by a discussion of the existing problems with the research and some suggestions for future studies.
