Positions words are a semantically rich class of words, with complex grammatical properties. Position words are a hot topic in linguistics research. The position word “Shàng” has the largest generic meaning, and has attracted the attention of scholars. In this paper I want to analyze how this complex word is used, and compare its use with other position words. This paper builds on the research of previous scholars. First I analyze the use of “Shàng” in 3 basic special relationships, then I analyze its extend metaphorical meaning, with reference to quality, time, number and status. As a result of mother tongue interference, false assumptions about the target language, unsuitable teaching strategies and the quality of the language environment, Chinese language learners make many mistakes when using “Shàng”. Building on the work of Lu Jianji’s Error classification, I analyze Chinese language learners’ speech, semantics, and grammars erroneous. I also analyze how students omit the use of the word “Shàng”, how they use it in the wrong sequence, how they add it to a sentence when it isn’t necessary, and how they mistakenly substitute it. Bases on the above classification, I analyze the dynamic HSK corpus as well as worked collected from the students at the Beijing Language and Culture University. I want to understand how and why these mistakes are made. Finally, after the error analysis outlined above, I propose several strategies that can improve the teaching of the word “Shàng”.
