International students of colleges and universities who study Chinese in China nowadays can be divided into two categories, language students and undergraduates. The practical and theoretical results related to teaching research about language students (those who study Chinese as a language) are rich.While this is not the case with the undergraduates (those who study Chinese a relative major).the relevant research is still at an early stage.Take a compulsory course,the modem Chinese, for example.the authoritative teaching materials are still in need.A scientific and reasonable teaching book is crucial for students who master the modem Chinese to better their study on major. This article will provide a preliminary design of the teaching material after an analyze of the existing modern Chinese textbooks which is applied for the foreign students,and will offer some methods and the opinions towards future textbooks writing.This article is divided into four parts.The first part of introduction compares the current study situation for modem Chinese between foreign undergraduates and Chinese students from the perspective of teaching materials,and puts forward the problems to be solved. The second part,which concerns on the teaching contents,selects several representative modern Chinese textbooks (mainly two books,Borong Huang, Xudong Liao Modern Chinese and Binhan Lan, Xiangdong Xing Modern Chinese) to analyze the differences on contents. grammar points and exercises arrangement,and brings forward three principles of compiling textbooks,that is pertinence,popularity and practicality. The third part,the focus of this article, demonstrates the specific steps of textbook writing which are concept explanation, examples, contrastive analysis, error prone points summary, class practice, exercise design and extension through the discussion of the existing teaching materials and the survey on the actual learning situation of undergraduate students.and then set up an instance to express the concept of the design.The fourth part illustrates the innovation points and advantages of new design and predicts some possible problems might appear in the practical application through a sample design.The article eventually briefly concludes the overall concept, research conclusion, innovations and deficiencies of teaching material design.
