Shizong dialect is a typical language which belongs to the southwest mandarin of northern dialect branches. But for now, the research on Shizong dialect stills in its infancy and haves fewer results, therefore, it is necessary to conduct deep and effective researc h, which not only can provide a reference for sociolinguistics, local folklore studies and so on also have some role in promoting on locals’ Mandarin- learning.This thesis mainly studies Shizong spoken dialect, and systematically describes and analyses the pronunciation, vocabulary and grammar of Shizong dialect with methods of field surveys, interviews, description and comparative analysis from the perspective of synchrony and diachrony, so as to reflect the overall appearance and characteristics of Shizong dialect. It consists of four parts:The first part is introduction. It mainly introduces the history, geography and population status of Shizong, and gives a general description of Shizong dialect, illustration of signs and brief introduction of the investigation.The second part is pronounciation. This part describes the phonetic system from the aspects of initials, finals, tones as well as their combination rules of Shizong dialect, and compares the system with that of both the mandarin phonology and t he middle ancient C hinese language in synchrony and diachrony perspectives, and then produces a homophone table.The third part is vocabulary. The vocabulary survey normally refer to Dialect Survey Glossary from CASS Institute of Linguistics, then fills and perfects during the investigation. Meanwhile, the author compiles Shizong dialect classified vocabularies which includes more than 3600 vocabularies according to 35 categories, like astronomy, geography and so on.The fourth part is grammar. This part mainly explains those grammatical phenomena with special characteristics found in the investigation. The majority of them are about morphology and syntax. Morphology including reduplication word formation, affixation word formation, multi-category words etc. The syntactic part includes a "ge" sentence, negative sentence, "V de" sentences and so on.
