Recent years,Teaching of Chinese as a second language has developed rapidly.However, as an essential part of Chinese teaching,the teaching of Chinese characters hasn’t been fully valued and developed. On one hand, the combination of its pronunciation, character pattern and literal meaning is difficult to comprehend, on the other hand, foreign students usually consider that the characters are the most difficult part of Chinese learning for their lack of knowledge of Chinese characters, thus, they attend to be afraid of learning characters. The teaching of Chinese characters has important significance in the whole teaching of Chinese program. Chinese characters is the carrier of Chinese culture, the words that are composed by the characters contains the historical memory of Chinese civilization through which we can have a better understanding of the past. Therefore, it is a crucial task for the foreign students to learn Chinese characters.The beginning of the learning is a critical period for both teachers and students, a good textbook is highly required. The New Practical Chinese Reader Textbook is a popular textbook that wildly used among the foreign learners. According to the analysis of the Chinese characters in this textbook, I proposed some suitable teaching methods of outward Chinese characters teaching. There are four parts of this paper.The first part is the significance of choosing this topic and the summary of current academic research of the teaching of Chinese character. The second part is the analysis of the chosen textbook. The third part is the discussion of the teaching principles and methods. The last part is the specific instructional design based on the textbook.The inspiration of the instructional designs in this paper are come from my practicing experience in Shandong University of Science and Technology. Hopefully through this essay I can make a modest contribution to the teaching of Chinese characters.
