The Application Of Cohesive Devices In Chinese And English

The purpose of interpreting is to deliver the language meaning expressed by the speakers so that people speaking different languages can understand each other and communicate with each other. As one of the most important type of interpretation, consecutive interpreting is widely used in various conferences. C-E consecutive interpreting requires interpreters correctly understand the speakers’ meaning, and immediately transform the meaning into English properly. In this process, interpreters must establish a sense of discourse, so the cohesion in discourse is of great importance in the study of interpretation. Because there are differences between Chinese and English, interpreters must use proper cohesive devices to make the translation coherent and fluent, thus the audience can understand the meaning and purpose of the speakers correctly. Under the theoretical framework of Halliday and Hason’s cohesion theory, this thesis attempts to analyze cohesive devices in discourse, and study the application of cohesive devices in consecutive interpreting with the supporting examples from interpretation of press conferences by Premier Li Keqiang. This thesis aims to offer some references for beginners in interpreting field.
