With the usage of expressing the meaning of time, variable interval time adverbs play an important role in Modern Chinese Vocabulary. However, because of the large quantities, various types and complicated usages of variable interval time adverbs, it is rather difficult for foreign students to use them correctly.Based on previous study, this research focuses on the properties of variable interval time adverbs, discusses their classification and analyses variable interval time adverbs with respect to their semanteme, grammar and pragmatics.In addition, according to the collection and analysis of ontology research of variable interval time adverbs and deviations that foreign students could make, a study of variable interval time adverbs on teaching Chinese as a second language is made. Practical and specific teaching suggestions have been proposed to improve teaching efficiency and a teaching method is designed for the commonly used words “Yizhi” and “Zong”.
