The study of political stability has always been an important topic in politics, while the study of political transition societies is an important research field ofcomparative politics. Since the end of World War II, many countries in the world havestarted the process of political transition, but democracy seems to fail to bringprosperity. Instead, political unrest and instability happens a lot, like severeconfrontation between major political powers, complex social contradiction anddifferent kinds of conflicts. So it has become a hot issue in academic studies abouthow to achieve political stability in political transition societies. Taiwan andSingapore are typical authoritarian society and manage to keep politically stable to acertain extent with different characteristics. Before Taiwan’s political transition, theauthoritarian regime went through the complete stages of weakening, shacking andcollapse. During its political transition, the society also faced with political chaos, social tearing, etc. However, the society recognizes the basic democratic rules and thesociety abide by the baseline of democratic system yet with many political chaoses. The authoritarian regime in Singapore is also going through many changes. But theruling party has always been legitimate and the traditional political identity has neverbeen strongly shaken. Now entering the21stcentury, driven by globalization anddemocratization, the ruling party has to expand the political participation rights andpromote the political transition to consolidate its ruling legitimacy, which guaranteesthat the political transition process is relatively smooth and stable. This thesis applies to the theory of political culture and aims at studying thefundamental element that affect the political stability in political transition societies, with both theoretical and practical significance. It can prove the decisive role ofpolitical identity on political stability in political transition societies, and also it canexplain that in different society, the carrier of political identity can be different, but allcan lead to the fundamental element of political stability. And with the absence of thepolitical identity, the political stability will be in crisis.
