Network management technology has being developing rapidly since SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) was published at the end of 1980s.It becomes an essential element in constructing and maintaining networks along with the enhancement of management functions and expanding of managed objects. With the rapid development of the network technology, the scale and complexity of networks has increased greatly. Under this background, the traditional management protocols can not meet the requirement of network management. The maturity of Web technology and the flourishing development of XML have brought a new revolution to network management technology and mode. It seems that, XML-based and Web-based technologies have been emerging as a promising approach to network management. This paper first analyzes the protocols and functions of network management, along with its basic theory and models. The widely supported SNMP is especially discussed. Then common network management architectures are compared from several aspects, including their suitable applications. A concrete solution—network management based on both Web and XML is finally brought forward on the foundation of web-based network management, combining with XML-related technologies. The proposed approach in this paper is the extension of the network management conceptual model based on Web. The Simple Object Access Protocol (SOAP) is chosen to bind over HTTP for transporting. The system operations, which are used most frequently in network management protocols, are also defined. In order to deal with the problems of compatibility with legacy system supporting the SNMP, an XML/SNMP gateway is then introduced .The gateway achieves the goal of interaction translation between XML and SNMP at three levels—the process level, the message level and the protocol level. A possible scenario to implement the SNMP is presented.Utilizing several new techniques, which are currently used to solve the problems existing in the heterogeneous system platforms for the purpose of interoperability, especially XML-based technologies, Web-based technologies and SOAP, the result of this study provides theoretical and practical supports for synthetical network management system under large-scale network environment.
