As a national strategic industry, equipment industry takes an important position in national industry and its development directly affects the industrialization progress and national competition capability. However, at present there is a long technology distance between Chinese enterprises and foreign competitors. Therefore, how to exist and develop in the competitive market is a critical problem that equipment enterprises should resolve in the process of structure upgrade. Chinese enterprises have experienced the transition from planned economy system to market economy system, and their development paths are obviously different from the foreign competitors. So it is necessary to explore the reengineering patterns of technological capability of Chinese enterprises in order to improve their technological ability to a new stage.Firstly, starting with case study, this paper analyzes the development condition of equipment industry in China and screens out some typical equipment enterprises which develop better in recent years. Secondly, this paper analyzes the technological capability evolution process of eighteen typical equipment enterprises in northeast of China, and summarizes five primary technological capability reengineering patterns. Then, the technological capability development mechanism, applying condition, merits and shortcomings of every pattern are explored based on theories of technological capability and technological learning. Thirdly, the influence factors of choosing pattern according to the enterprises' characteristics and the conditions of market competition are analyzed. Three key factors which influence enterprises to choose the patterns are summarized, and a matching model between the factors and pattern choices is built up.Two conclusions can be drawn from the research. For one thing, there are five primary technological capability reengineering patterns of equipment industry, including Secondary Innovation, Technological Cooperation, Technological Integration, Independent R&D and Mergers and Acquisitions (M&A). For another, there are three key influence factors of pattern choosing, including the difficulty of obtaining external technology, technological capability and technology distance.
