Urban land is the supporting body of regional socio-economic development, and accompanied by speeding up the process of urbanization, urban land-use demands continue to increase. As the core areas of politics, economy and culture, urbanization and urban land expansion of Chongqing city is accelerating growth, which lead to take up lot of land resources. Urban land use patterns of Chongqing city is in a critical period of transition from extensive to intensive expansion type, how to ease the huge contradiction between reasonable demands of urban land and regulation of extraordinary expansion of urban land, this becomes an important problem which should be solved in this stage. Therefore, carrying out the research about expansion characteristics and driving forces in Chongqing city, analyzing the spatial and temporal evolution characteristics of urban land expansion in Chongqing city; exploring the change trends of urban land; finding the relationships between the expansion of urban land-use and driving factors about nature, society, economy, policy; summarizing the discipline between socio-economic development and land-use change; on this basis, raising the suggestions on the promotion of rational expansion of urban land-use; which can promote the protection of land resources and the rational regulation of urban land on the size and layout, can control the irrational expansion of urban land-use, and achieve the sustainable use of land resources in the end.This article analyzes the status of urban land-use firstly, including total level, per capita level, land using structure and land using benefit of urban land; analyzes the expansion characteristics of urban land-use in Chongqing city secondly, including the spatio-temporal evolution characteristics of urban expansion, the coordination between land use expansion and socio-economic development; Then this article systematically analyzes the driving forces of urban land expansion in Chongqing city, including the nature, economy, society, policy and other general driving factors, building index system of driving factors, using correlation analysis and principal component analysis to extract the core driving forces, analyzing comparatively the core driving forces of urban land expansion in Chongqing city; Finally, this article offers to the suggestions on the promotion of rational expansion of urban land-use according to the current problems of urban land expansion. Through this research, we can come to the following conclusions:Through the analysis of urban land expansion characteristics, it shows that the urban land quantity of Chongqing is in the state of constantly expanding, but with an uneven average annual growth rate; The speed of urban land expansion in Chongqing is faster than the speed of construction land expansion; From 1997 to 2008, the annual propagating speed of urban land use in Chongqing are different, Jiangbei District and Shapingba District belong to the super-fast spreading area, Dadukou District and Nanan District belong to the high-speed spreading area, YuBei District belongs to medium speed expansion area, Banan District, Jiulongpo District and Beibei District belong to low speed expansion area, Yuzhong District belongs to stagnation spreading area; The speed of urban land expansion is faster than the speed of urban population growth, and it is bigger than the reasonable value 1.12; The economic growth pace in Chongqing is faster raltived to the urban land expansion rate; New urban land use efficiency in Chongqing is becoming more better, but the overall level is not high, and there are differences in various districts.Through the study of urban land expansion driving mechanism, it shows that the core driving factors of urban land expansion in Chongqing city include non-agricultural population, total fixed asset investment, per capita disposable income of urban residents:non-agricultural population and total fixed asset investment are positively correlated with urban land expansion, which illustrates that population and investment are the major socio-economic driving factors to promote urban land expansion; there is a negative relation between per capita disposable income of urban residents and urban land expansion, which illustrates the income can alleviate the urban land expansion trend.
