Sustainable Development Of Potato Industry In Shanxi Province

Potato is one of the main crops in Shanxi province where potato industry has been made achievement in structural adjustment in recent years. But some restrictions still exists which are mainly showed as four aspects. The first is that cultivation techniques fall behind, and advanced practical techniques such as film-covering, balanced fertilizer supplying and mechanization have not been spread for large areas. The second is that drought takes place frequently, detoxified potato is spread slowly and yield per area is low and unstable. The third is that varieties specially for processing purpose lack and industries have no fixed producing bases for material supplying. The fourth is that competition in domestic market is becoming more and more intense, and profit is decreasing in processing industries which lack famous-brand products. The fifth is that farmers pay little enthusiasm in planting potato for lower interest. Therefore, adjusting variety structure, establishing detoxified potato breeding system, optimizing cultivation techniques and fostering potato deep-processing industries become the strategy and countermeasure for sustainable development of potato industry in Shanxi.Investigated in main potato producing counties, detoxified potato breeding centers and large and medium potato processing industries in Shanxi province, referred to relative information in main potato producing countries and main producing provinces in China, analyzed the present situation, comparative superiority and existent disparities in potato processing, this research proposed several strategic suggestions in sustainable potato development in Shanxi province. The main results show as follow.1. Thought about potato industry development in Shanxi should be adjusted, and the potato industrialization should be extended by adjusting variety structure, establishing producing-bases, spreading detoxified potatoes, developing processing industries, exploiting domestic and abroad market, paying more attention to producing, processing and selling, implementing the following four projects as new variety introduction and breed, detoxified potato multiplication and quality inspection, and primary product process and conversion.2.
