The Xiaolangdi Multipurpose Dam Project is one of the largest project with biggest single loan from the World Bank, as well as a challenging project in the worldwide. This project is a large-size project, mainly consisting of big tunnels, with high difficulties in terms of technology and construction due to complicated geological conditions. Construction of the project was undertaken by several international contractors, which brought a lot of challenge to the Employer with respect to management and coordination. Nevertheless, with support and concern of Chinese government at various levels, as well as joint effort input by the parties concerned, all the major works were completed ahead of schedule, within budget planned. All these achievements are attributable to the key role of contract management at the core.The paper systematically analyses the important role of contract management in construction of international project, presents studies on FIDIC conditions universally accepted in the world. The paper focuses studies on methods used in Xiaolangdi international contract management, variations and claims happened, key issues in international contract management, particularly in treatment of variations, claim resolution process and dispute resolution. The findings from the studies may be valuable to contract management in future similar projects.
