With the rapid development of metropolitan areas at home and abroad, the structure of the regional economy appears new. Metropolitan areas are very important to the regional development. At present, our country is in the transition of the industry and urbanization, so there are many obvious contradictions. To solve these contradictions, we should develop with the idea of scientific development and consider people as the foremost to construct the harmonious society. During this process, the unified design between the city and the countryside, and the perfection of the urban system are very important to the construction of harmonious society. Based on these reasons, this paper researches the urban system of Chengyu Metropolitan Area.There are five chapters. The first one is introduction. It mainly analyses the background, the significance and the status of the research at home and abroad. The second chapter concludes the theories of metropolitan areas and urban systems. The third section mainly analyses the status and the existent issues of Chengyu Metropolitan Area. The fourth section mainly points out the future orientation of Chengyu and gives some suggestions that help Chengyu optimize its urban system. The last one is conclusion.In this paper, the author points out that Chengyu Metropolitan Area should perfect its urban system, increase the number of big cities, and make big cities, medium cities and small cities develop harmoniously. Then, make some big cities the secondary centers of the region to accelerate the development of surrounding areas. Make the cities distribute more reasonably and strengthen the relations of cities. Form the distribution of two Metropolitan areas, two clusters, and four belts, and strengthen the relations of them. Finally, cities should develop characteristic industries and their functional orientations.
