Under the economy globalization and regional economy integration background, urban agglomeration become a new important space organization shape gradually in the distributed systems of international productive force and the area division of physical labor. The key of developing urban agglomeration and improving regional competence is to recognize actually the relations of competence and cooperation between cities in the urban agglomeration, to recognize the status and function of important city in the urban agglomeration clearly, to harmonize the benefit system between cities in the urban agglomeration. As a new pattern of urban agglomeration in the southwest areas, Chengyu urban agglomeration is staying the primary periods of urban agglomeration development. It is important academic and practice sense to accelerate the construction of Chengyu urban agglomeration, to promote regional competence, to speed up regional development harmoniously, by optimizing urban functional position of important city in the urban agglomeration, drafting rational development strategy and forming a scientific division and cooperation urban agglomerate systems.From the space development angle of regional economy, this article have used some related theories which including regional economy, urban economy, economic geography, developed economy and so on, to study the problems of urban functional position between important city in the urban agglomeration. When choosing the vital point of this research, first of all, it comes from the related concepts and elementary theories of central city in the urban agglomeration. On the basis of analyzing the present conditions and problems of urban functional position about important city in the Chengyu urban agglomeration, through the comparable research of urban development diversities and economic function relations about important city in the Chengyu urban agglomeration, it has analyzed the urban functional position and relations of important city. During this research, it has used mainly the appraised manner of urban comprehensive competence to study the differences between cities in the urban agglomeration, which has utilized gray related manner and qualitative analysis to analyze every urban competence contrastively, by choosing one of more overall index systems reflecting urban comprehensive competence. In addition, it has researched urban functional relations between important cities, by utilizing the pattern of urban flows intensity to measure the space flows of some urban flows in the urban agglomeration which including people flows, commodity flows, capital flows, technique flows, information flows. After that, it has given some policies and suggestions to improve the optimization of urban functions, on the basis of optimizing the functional position of the important city.
