China's tourism industry has made good achievements over the last 20 years of development. China's tourism exchange revenue in 1980 was 617 million U.S. dollars, ranking as the world No. 34; China's tourism foreign exchange earnings in 2002 were 20.385 billion U.S. dollars, ranking as the world to No. 5. In the era of rapid development of the tourism industry, urban tourism plays a more prominent role. City tourism investors and policy-makers focus on this theme. Indeed, in 1999, Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Zhuhai, three cities on the tourism exchange revenue accounted for 82% of Guangdong's Province. In 2005, the country's 28 major tourism cities in tourism exchange revenue accounted for 64.06% of China.In the west, Chengdu City Tourism competitiveness is relatively strong, but with Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen and other cities, Chengdu city tourism competitiveness is weak. The research for Chengdu city tourism, scholars are often concerned about the development of the rural tourism, the panda resources, the ancient culture tourism resources, but all researches'study angle is not the angle of comparing with other cities.This paper attempts to study how to raise the Chengdu City Tourism competitiveness from this angle.The paper consists of five chapters; the main part of the paper has more than 40,000 characters.The first chapter is introductory part, including the main purpose of writing this paper, the lack of previous research, and these research ideas. Writing paper has three main objectives: first, creating an analytical model; Secondly, evaluation of all the major cities by this model; thirdly, giving some useful information to Chengdu. So, I sort out the progress of the research in home and abroad, and then find out some shortcomings of the former study, finally I give my research ideas.The second chapter focuses on the substance of city tourism competitiveness. This chapter is divided into two sections: the first section mainly includes the definition of the concept of urban tourism; the analysis of the concept urban tourism, tourism city and metropolis tourism; the characteristics of urban tourism in the study, the second section mainly includes the definition of the competitiveness, the industrial competitiveness and the urban tourism competitiveness, then give the border of the urban tourism, finally supply some major city for study.The third chapter focuses on the related theory of competitiveness and then gives the evaluation model on the basis the former theory and model .The evaluation model include the achievement of the urban tourism development, the production factors of the urban tourism, the supporting conditions of the urban tourism and the economical condition of the city.The fourth chapter gives the index system and uses Factor Analysis to evaluate the major cities'tourism competitiveness. The results include: first, economically developed coastal city which is rich in tourism resources rank top, and the economically developed cities which lack of resources rank forward, the western Chengdu, Chongqing rank in the middle segment, Harbin and Changchun in the northeast rank bottom; second, how to create and utilize of tourism resources is the key to enhance competitiveness; third, lacking of government support, tourism financing difficulties, lacking of the good resources, low level of urbanization and economic condition affect the development of Chengdu tourism.The fifth chapter gives some useful suggestions to enhance the competitiveness of Chengdu tourism, which are understand tourism and economic relations and make a good position, standardize the behavior of the government and actively promote the market process of Chengdu tourism, make up for lacking of quality tourism resources through regional cooperation in tourism, upgrade the level of the beauty spot, optimization of urban tourism image, continue to improve urban infrastructure, strengthen tourism personnel training, study on the characteristics of tourism resources and market to determine appropriate development strategies, create some new tourism product such as folk customs and festival exhibition, and attract clients through marketing.In the course of writing this article, some new ideas put forward in the paper such as research methods, study model, useful suggestion for Chengdu and so on. Of course, due to the lack of practical experience, this is still not enough in some of the issues discussed, for example, the inherent characteristics of urban tourism, and the operational value of the suggestions.
